Great, informative, and straight-to-the-point article Paul. Thanks! I’m gathering a lot of information about e-publishing on the Kindle platform on our ‘Write2Profit’ Writer’s Website, and this is really helpful. As a Kindle ‘newbie’ I’m also hoping to publish some e-Books on Kindle shortly, so again – thanks for a really useful and informative article. I’m off to get your free e-Book now, so thanks for that, too!

Most of the large print-on-demand self-publishing operations offer some sort of e-book conversion service and distribution -- and sometimes it gets bundled into a print-publishing package (these companies usually charge a few hundred dollars for converting your e-book). In some cases, this can work out OK for authors who don't care about extracting as much money as they can from each sale and don't want to work with a separate company to create an e-book once they've uploaded their PDF file for their print book. For those who don't think they'll end up selling a lot of copies of their e-book, this can be a fine arrangement, but just beware that in many cases you can't set your own price and more money is being taken out of your net profits than should be. Again, you should strongly consider avoiding companies that don't let you set your own price.
I begin with one caveat: The whole e-book market is rapidly evolving, and a lot of self-publishing companies are offering e-book deals bundled into their print book publishing packages, which makes them harder to break out and evaluate. It's all quite complicated, and in an effort to sort through the confusion, I've decided to offer a few basic tips and present what I think are some of the best options out there for creating an e-book quickly and easily. As things change -- and they will -- I'll do my best to keep this column up to date.
I believe, one of the best ways you can get your book to number one on Amazon by is to make use of these free eBook promoting websites and increasing it\’s popularity. If you do it all at once, it seems to turn viral and in no time, Amazon will see your book increasing in popularity and will display it on their main page. You can also try getting users to place reviews on your Amazon listing. A few reviews with 4+ stars will get your book noticed.CheersNick

Verify your publishing territories. If you are self-publishing and you hold all the rights, you just click, “Worldwide.” If you are already traditionally published, you may own rights in other territories. For example, say you published with a publisher in the US and sold only the US rights, you could self-publish in the UK or Australia or any other country. You can select individual territories and deselect the ones that you have sold to someone else.

I talked to Amazon who told me you can have your books on your website while in the Select Program only if you are in their affiliate program and the book is available via one of their book widgets or a text link generated by their affiliate program. So you can have them on your website or link to them in articles, ect., as long as the links are part of the Amazon Associates Program. Hope that helps!

Very few torrenting sites survive the storm brought about by copyright infringement authorities, and The Pirate Bay (aka TPB) is one of them. In spite of being closed down multiple times, the site still continues to operate in full swing. You’ll find a massive range of e-Books in its database, ranging across a wide array of genres such as contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction, travel guides, etc. Note that in some regions TPB has been blocked so you can use a proxy site to get access to the content. Once you’re on the site, simply key in whichever e-Book you wish to download, and voila! You can look for The Pirate Bay proxy sites on this webpage.
Great post and great insight on how to get your ebooks published and where. This post gave me great ideas on a booklet I’m revising for my business. Thought I should publish as a .PDF on my website, but now I’m considering creating it for Kindle too. With the ever-changing audiences and readers demanding more for less, it really is important to be so progressive. I’m diversifying my offerings and this will be one avenue I definitely want to pursue.

If you're going to self-publish ebooks or you are already selling them, then I do recommend that you buy an ebook reader or at least try reading an ebook on one of the many free apps. You need to understand the mindset of an ebook reader as well as their online experience. I read 99% ebooks these days, mostly on the Kindle Paperwhite and my iPhone Kindle app. I mostly download samples before buying, unless I know and trust the author. I also have preferences around pricing, and you will pick these things up if you try reading digitally.

VPNs encrypt your connection and reroute it through their servers, making it virtually untraceable and keeping you safe. It will be very hard, if not impossible, for anyone to keep track of what and when you download – and this extends to all of your other online activity, too. Just make sure your VPN has top-shelf encryption and a proven no-logging policy.
"I was looking for a site to download eBook torrents and I was recommended to use KickAss Torrents. This site has a very easy to use interface and allowed me to search a wide array of torrents for the exact eBooks (and others!) that I was looking for. I was able to easily download the torrents and then utilize them in my eReader at home, which is exactly what I was looking to do. KickAss Torrents supplied me with what I was looking for and I am very happy with the results. "

If you can’t hire an editor, use your resources (friends, mentors, coworkers, blogger/writer friends, etc). A lot of my editing in my last book was a lot of teamwork and open brainstorming/openly editing. I was also fortunate to have a friend with great editorial skills, but mainly it helps to have a fresh pair of eyes read over your work (and usually being right next to them to hear what they read).
The ocean of books are endless, but our money is limited. And pirated books are illegal. But all these legal sites that we are going to introduce to you can download free EPUB ebooks. You can subscribe or bookmark these sites to keep inform with updated new EPUB books and contents. We will also continually update more sites which can download EPUB books.
Thank you for a well-written and well-formatted post. I’ve tried to scan all 182 comments and answers (!) but forgive me if this has already been addressed… I’m going to publish with KDP then opt-out @ 90 days so I can sell via my own site. I believe Word play better than Pages with KDP due to conversion issues to .mobi. My content will consist of stories, photographs and recipes – so I anticipate formatting nightmares.

To be clear, there are other ways to go about self-publishing your e-book. For example, I haven't talked about such outfits as Ingram Digital, Overdrive, or LibreDigital, because they're geared toward larger publishing or self-publishing operations rather than individuals. To help focus your decision-making process, I've tried to stick to what I consider the important players right now.

Most of the information on this site is free for you to read, watch or listen to, but The Creative Penn is also a business and my livelihood. iBooks Author allows authors to create and publish their own e-books for sale in Apple’s iBookstore. The process is a bit more involved compared to other e-book services, but it’s a great option for design-savvy authors with multimedia-heavy books like children’s books or cookbooks. Authors can choose from several templates, including classic textbook, cookbook, or photo book and have the ability to add charts, tables, audio, and video to their books using widgets or “drag and drop.” To begin, authors must fill out a Paid Books Account application, which is reviewed in approximately two business days. Once authors receive a confirmation email, they must download a “delivery application” in order to deliver the book. Authors must have an Apple ID along with a valid credit card on file to sell books. iBooks Author does not offer a conversion service, but Apple does offer a list of approved “aggregators” who will format and deliver your book to the iBookstore for a fee -- these include Bookwire, Ingram, INscribe, Smashwords, and BookBaby. Royalties are 70% of list price with no fees. ISBNs are not provided.
