Great post, Carol. I am sooo looking forward to the webinar on Wednesday. I am working on a series of ebooks; but with the intention of combining them into one big book (with each booklet representing a chapter) once they are all complete. Maybe I should keep them all separate? Also, I haven’t used Kindle format because I have a few pages in some that need printed. My understanding is you can’t print from a Kindle. Guess that’s another question for Wed.?
The best-known websites for your eBooks. Look for the latest books here. In this age of strict piracy surveillance, it is hard to maintain one’s popularity. However, extratorrent continues to gain more and more traffic as the days go by. The community is also very active and has grown to become one of the most active communities in the whole world. Extratorrent also hosts the ETTV and ETRG release groups.
Someone asked in the comments here about books in the Peter Pan series and I thought that it would be a good idea to gather together the various locations for the books in a children's series. Since I did not want to take up further web pages here at Gizmo's, I set up a site at Google Sites to provide the links for these books. As of now, I have listed only one series, but if there is interest I will post up more. Please let me know in the comments below (or at the Google site) if you are interested.

Barnes & Noble's PubIt self-publishing operation offers similar features to Amazon's KDP, but the two platforms do have their differences. Barnes & Noble has set the PubIt royalty rate for authors at 65 percent of the sale price for titles priced $2.99 and higher. The rate falls to 40 percent if you choose to go lower than $2.99 or higher than $9.99, with B&N setting 99 cents as the lowest allowable price and $199.99 as the highest. (For books priced under $2.99 or over $9.99, you actually earn more by distributing your book to B&N through Smashwords, which pays 60 percent list for all prices 99 cents and up.
It's also worth noting that you can mix and match and go direct with Amazon (KDP), uploading your own file and managing your account, and then use an aggregator such as Smashwords for additional distribution to other e-book stores. At this point there are no hard and set rules and, as I said in the beginning, the e-book market is very fluid, seeing significant changes almost every month. As always, please feel free to post your opinion in the comments section, particularly if you've had experience publishing your e-book already and can share your observations with others. And remember, Google is your best friend for the finer parts of self-publishing, such as converting a Word file to a PDF.
Lastly, it's worth noting that Smashwords provides free ISBNs. I'm not going to get into a full on discussion of ISBN, which is "a unique identifier" associated with your e-book, but most companies provide a free ISBN for your e-book or roll the price up into a package. Smashwords has a good quick guide to e-book ISBNs that you should take a look at.

Paul, Thank you so much for this valuable content, you have just saved me a LOT of time and made the consideration of producing an eBook a lot more doable. I keep thinking I must start work on an eBook and have had thoughts about Amazon, but didn’t really believe it would be possible or that I would run into too many issues. Hearing this from someone who has been through the process is so valuable….now to decide what would be of value to my audience. Thinking time 🙂
It’s only a PDF. I did not have the vaguest idea how to digitally publish an ebook. Rather than try to figure it out, I wanted to just do a PDF. I knew how to get a designer to make me a PDF, so I did that. The world of digital publishing for the Kindle and Nook and all the other ways completely confused me. So I ignored it. The problem is, the Kindle format is just exploding. I kept getting inquiries from writers about whether I had a Kindle version — and I had to tell them no, I didn’t. Who knows how many sales I lost.
Booktango's Web site advertises a "100 percent royalty," which is misleading considering you get that rate only from the e-books you sell on the Booktango Web site and Booktango charges a fee for each book you sell (30 percent of the list price -- the same as Amazon). For other outlets, Booktango takes 10 percent of your net profits, resulting in a "90 percent royalty," which is also misleading because the net profit in its sample royalty rates seems smaller than it should be. Honestly, Booktango's royalty rates don't look too good and can't match its competitors' rates.
You can also repurpose a book that is in the public domain. This means the copyright has expired and anybody can take the content of those books, and publish them, either updated or reworked in some way or as is. Did you see that book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies that came out a few years ago? That’s a great example of reworking a public domain book.
Set your pricing. Most of the stores have country-specific pricing and it's well worth setting these individually instead of relying on an automatic exchange rate calculation. For example, if you price at US$4.99 and just leave it to automatically calculate for GBP, then readers in the UK might see £3.21, which is an odd price. It's best to change the UK price to £2.99 or £3.49 which is a price readers are more used to seeing. Amazon has specific price bands for royalties, so you need to price between $2.99 and $9.99, if you want 70% royalty. If you're pricing below or above that, then it's 35%. If you're in KDP Select, it doesn't make so much of a difference, because you'll get paid per page read.
Yes, there are lots of money-grabbing schemes disguised as digital novels out there. You can literally find hundreds of websites offering "foolproof" ways to make "thousands of dollars in your spare time"—all you need to do is purchase a downloadable self-help guide for $29.99! These authors make money by selling books on how to sell ebooks to make money.
Gary,I agree. I actually got my husband to get really really good at this and now he is doing the formatting and publishing for others, and of course he is doing all of my books. It helps to do a professional publish because as you say,it is very important to make the right impression with our books. I am so happy that Amazon brought us the Kindle store. It is an amazing platform!
You work from a selection of templates and can add multitouch widgets to include interactive photo galleries, movies, 3D objects, and more. When you're done, you then have to fill out an application to create an account before you can upload your creations to the iBookstore or iTunes U (Apple has billed iBooks Author as a multifaceted tool for creating everything from textbooks to cookbooks to picture books, and anything else you can think of).
Disadvantage: Some readers prefer to hold a book in their hands and will pay more for the right to own the object and not just the story. These tactile types might not spend money on what seems like "nothing" to them. In addition, "quick access" is quick only if you know how to do it. Some book buyers may have trouble figuring out the process or may not have the correct software to accommodate your book format.
There are also the inevitable typos. No matter how many editors you use, somebody will always find a problem. Of course, this happens with traditionally published books too. It may be within a month or two, it may be a year later, but you know you’re going to want to fix it! If you have control, you can fix it yourself and upload a new file. If you outsource this task, you will need to pay for these updates and it won’t be as fast.

You may already know of this site: The University of Virgina has a VERY OLD, and now abandoned in place, library of selected Hypertexts ... a few of which are good reads. The link is old, and very obscure: I saw some DUST fall off when I first clicked on it! http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/main.html (Darn I hate to see a project RUSTING in cyberspace like this .... :( ) When WAS that page last updated, anyway? I suspect it originated about the era of Windows 3.1 ~~~~~ 'cause that URL is very 'DOS like' ....
ExtraTorrent has an impressive collection of Books in the electronic formats such as AZW3, MOBI, EPUB, PDF, etc. Here you will be able to download eBook torrent in multiple genres such as fiction, classics, general reads, educational, best sellers, etc. I could quickly find some interesting eBooks such as A Midnight Dream, Time to Kill, The Essentials of Statistics, Secret to Drawing Realistic Facts by Carrie Stuart Parks, etc.
As the name suggests, manybooks.net is only for the e-books. It has a wide variety of e-books available to download for free. In a VPN connection, your IP gets masked, so nobody can track your IP address and locate you. While downloading eBooks from torrenting websites it is paramount to browse through a VPN. Moreover, viruses and dubious bugs can’t follow you back and corrupt your system or leak or steal your identity online. When you use public VPNs to download books, then also you are kept secured against all odds, as VPN forms a protected fence between your browsing and the ISP or the world.
This is probably the most comprehensive Kindle article I’ve ever read. As someone who’s been in publishing for many years and seen eBooks grow from internet marketers to the general public, and therefore being abused by authors who don’t know any better, I thank you for posting the importance of audience, a decent cover, and especially proper formatting.
Announce the event or book sales campaign on Google+ and also on Goodreads at least three weeks before the date. They both offer a free event function. A site that is very easy and fast to set up. Promote this event (can be real life or virtual) heavily on FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Google, your blog and to your email list. And if your local newspaper, neighborhood paper etc. has an event page, or if they have an online version, get your event in! Search the internet for events/websites in your area and announce it there too.
