Assuming you have a finished and polished manuscript ready to be published, your first task is to create an ebook file; EPUB is the industry standard ebook format accepted by nearly all retailers. Unfortunately, this cannot be done through a simple Word export, but many tools and services will help you prep an EPUB file. (While most retailers and distributors try to offer good Word-to-ebook conversion, results and quality vary tremendously. Use them with caution.)

As of April 19, 2013, all pages have been updated and all links have been checked with LinkChecker and are working. I will be unavailable for most of the time during the next month and usually will not be able to respond to posts. However, I will be back after that, so any new sites or corrections to the listings that you post would be appreciated even though I may not be able to respond when you post. Steve

"If all you want is older books, or just general textbooks for information, the site's great. None of the stuff on it is being used by my school though, so that's a bummer. My dad loves it though; he gets to read about all sorts of stuff for free. If you just want to learn, it's great. If you're looking to save money on class costs though, not gonna help. Wish more professors would assign out of the site's listings."
Vintage Cookbooks includes in their collection of vintage cookbooks a collection of vintage cookbooks from the late 1800s to 1950s for children. These will popup in an online reader, but if you look on the upper left of the reader, there is a link to OPen Library where the book may be downloaded in a wide variety of ebook formats. No sales funnel. Let’s face it — at this point, if your ebook isn’t on Amazon, you are missing a huge automatic sales funnel that could be sending you customers while you sit back and do nothing. Your ability to promote it on your own tiny blog is nothing compared to the exposure it gets on one of the biggest sites on the Internet, just from people doing searches in their “book” tab.
"Planet eBook is great if you are looking for free eBooks that are in the genre of classic literature. Books like "The Great Gatsby" and "A Tale of Two Cities". This website makes it easy to find and download these titles. There are 80+ titles available which is decent but nowhere near what Amazon has to offer in this category. I personally have found it easier to just use Amazon with my Kindle for free classic literature titles."
eBook Converter can be used to send and receive files between multiple third-party formats. The most common options include Kindle, ePub, Mobi and PDF. Other formats include (but may not be limited to) AZW, PRC and ADW3. Please note that there is no limited in regards to how may files can be converted. Not only will the content be accurately replicated, but this software bundle automatically resizes the text so that it will fit within the screen of the output device. The developers claim that eBook Converter is associated with speeds of up to five times faster than other options.
It all depends on what you’re knowledgable in. If you’re writing about a specific craft that you’re well-versed in, your blog is used to educate your audience on useful tips and insights that you learned and used through your own experiences. For example, Copyblogger provides insight on publishing, writing, blogging, marketing, and so forth. Their product varies from WordPress themes and tools used within.
"Extratorrent.cc is a good site for downloading ebooks, as well as music, movies, etc. On the very first page it will list for you all most popular downloads. Then if you look under the category Books there are thousands and thousands of torrents, something for everyone no matter your interest. Just be sure to use a VPN to protect your privacy and security."
Give away the first chapter of your book as an immediately accessible PDF on your web page or on Amazon. Include a re-tweet button in several strategic locations in the chapter. This allows people who love what they read, to easily share with friends on Twitter. When someone clicks on this re-tweet button, it shows a pre-crafted tweet that says: “I’m reading @……. new book: … Get the first chapter free here too: http://………” You get the idea?
Becky, the post image is a promo graphic put out by Amazon to advertise the Kindle Touch, not an image from the Amazon page for the The Paris Wife (which you can see is completely different). They chose to feature Paula McLain’s book on the device. We’re just using their supplied media graphic. Sorry for the confusion, but I’m not sure this is much of an issue that requires correction.
Scribd has long been the go-to spot for sharing text-based documents, but it’s been in the news recently for its new, subscription-based premium reader service (unlimited books for $8.99 a month). Now that the service has been monetized, e-books are available either to purchase separately (outside the subscription model) or via its subscription service and are available in both the Scribd store and Scribd apps with royalties at “80% of revenue.” Unlike with other publishers that require an e-pub file, authors can upload any file type (pdf, word doc, rtf) for free and make changes easily by uploading a new file —while still retaining the document’s statistics, comments, and URL. Scribd emphasizes its facilitation of discoverability with over 80 million monthly readers and a curated homepage of selected titles based on the subscriber’s interests. It also bills itself as a social publisher that supports comments on author’s work and allows embedding of documents in blogs and other websites. Authors must register for a free Scribd account. Authors control pricing and preview options and have access to “instant analytics.”

Thank you, Jane, for such a prompt reply. And, well, if that’s true about Rogue (as it seems it might be), then, with the kind of work I’ve written, that puts me back to Square One. My reasoning was taken from an article by a Writer’s Digest article I saw from June of this year by Brian Klems entitled “How Can the Average Writer Make Money Self-publishing Ebooks.” The link is: http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/how-can-the-average-writer-make-money-self-publishing-e-books He said this re: Rogue Reader/MTM: “• Rogue Pricing. If you write children’s books, then consider the Kindle Kids Book Creator, which is a specific tool for image-heavy children’s books. Check out this interview on the tool and also this interview with Karen Inglis on all aspects of children’s publishing. You can also check out iBooks Author, which can be used for children’s books on the iPad as well as textbooks with enhanced video and images.
To be clear, there are other ways to go about self-publishing your e-book. For example, I haven't talked about such outfits as Ingram Digital, Overdrive, or LibreDigital, because they're geared toward larger publishing or self-publishing operations rather than individuals. To help focus your decision-making process, I've tried to stick to what I consider the important players right now.
A lot of people ask me about creating children's books or other types of graphically rich books and e-books. I can't say I'm an expert in this area, but when you're dealing with graphics and images, the self-publishing equation becomes more difficult and expensive (formatting costs tend to go up as you add more images). However, Apple's trying to change all that with iBooks Author, which allows you to build multitouch interactive e-books that you can upload and sell in the iBookstore and view in the iBooks2 app on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
Michael Stonebreaker comes from good American stock. He loves his country, his family, and the diversity of friends and freedoms living in the United States affords. His father and grandfather before him fought to safeguard the principles he believes have led his country to unparalleled greatness. Now, the stalemate between the dark undercurrent of US politics and futile public discontent has reached the breaking point. An ingenious plot to save the nation will shatter his ideals of loyalty and patriotism, and rock the United States to its Constitutional core.
