You can set up your own website and sell your ebook directly online. You might make a PDF available to your readers for example. A simple shopping cart or PayPal link and you’re all set. A reader visits your site, they order, and they get a download link and get your book. It’s pretty much all automated, and you simply keep an eye on things to make sure the site is running smoothly.
Most of the information on this site is free for you to read, watch or listen to, but The Creative Penn is also a business and my livelihood. So please expect hyperlinks to be affiliate links in many cases, when I receive a small percentage of sales if you wish to purchase. I only recommend tools, books and services that I either use or people I know personally. Integrity and authenticity continue to be of the highest importance to me. Read the privacy policy here. Read the Cookie policy here. I hope you find the site useful! Thanks - Joanna
For books distributed by Smashwords to its retail network of the Apple iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo, Diesel and Baker & Taylor's Blio, the author earns 60 percent of the list price, the retailer takes 30 percent and Smashwords earns 10 percent. The cuts work essentially the same for overseas sales, though in countries that impose VAT taxes, the VAT often comes out of the purchase price before the percentages are applied.

Next to no marketing. I really had no idea how to market an ebook. OK, I built a little interest with a few blog posts about the content. But honestly — I did no contest, no giveaways, I wasn’t on Twitter yet. It was pretty minimal. I didn’t have a bunch of big bloggers contribute to it so that there’d be a team of people ready to help me market it. I look back now and I can think of 20 ways to promote it that I didn’t yet understand. So there was no big explosion of initial sales.
FreeBookSpot is another torrent site that caters specifically to e-book consumers. It has over 90 categories belonging to a horde of genres including engineering, fiction, architecture, astronomy, audio books, computers, DIY, hardware, graphics, psychology, etc. Though it does have a decent catalogue of fiction titles, it is more popular for non-fiction and educational books. You can browse by genres or other sub-categories such as “Wanted”, “Expired”, “Most Popular”, and “Selections”. They do have an option for registering yourself as a user but that’s not mandatory to get access to the content. Aside from downloading e-books, you could even share your e-books and receive feedback from fellow users.

November 22, 2013, 24 new sites added, 3 dead links removed and all other links checked and working. There are now 235 sites listed. I use LinkChecker to check page links and no longer visit each site individually to reconfirm. So, if you find a site that is not as it should be, then please post here in the comments. If you know of a site to be added to this listing, please post here in the comments. If you are the owner of a site that you would like added to this listing, it is better to contact me through the site (click on mr6n8). Also, no site that has an orange or red rating from WOT (Web of Trust) may be added to this listing, per site rules. So please check the WOT rating before posting. Thanks Steve
Check out our article on how to use Calibre to convert ebooks How to Auto-Convert Ebooks to Kindle Format When Importing Into Your Library How to Auto-Convert Ebooks to Kindle Format When Importing Into Your Library Calibre has another nifty trick up its sleeve: it can automatically convert any ebook into the Kindle's MOBI format when you import it into your library. If you write children’s books, then consider the Kindle Kids Book Creator, which is a specific tool for image-heavy children’s books. Check out this interview on the tool and also this interview with Karen Inglis on all aspects of children’s publishing. You can also check out iBooks Author, which can be used for children’s books on the iPad as well as textbooks with enhanced video and images.
Verdict: Most authors will use Amazon to sell their books, but the question is whether to go directly to them, and whether to opt into their exclusive program. More experienced writers seem to say ‘no’ to both of these, but if you’re starting out and not worried about smaller platforms, it might be the easiest option. You could also mix and match this with a platform like Gumroad (see below).

1337X is one among the eBook torrenting websites that allows you for downloading eBook torrents for free. When you sign up for free, it actually provides you with magnet links and works as a torrent indexing website. Using this peer-to-peer file hosting service you can access data from sites such as eDonkey, Bittorrent, IPFU, ZeroNet, Retroshare etc. The protocols for 1337X are similar to that of Bittorrent. In spite of having a vast range of opportunities for you, this eBook torrenting download platform is not searchable on Google.
Great, informative, and straight-to-the-point article Paul. Thanks! I’m gathering a lot of information about e-publishing on the Kindle platform on our ‘Write2Profit’ Writer’s Website, and this is really helpful. As a Kindle ‘newbie’ I’m also hoping to publish some e-Books on Kindle shortly, so again – thanks for a really useful and informative article. I’m off to get your free e-Book now, so thanks for that, too!

I begin with one caveat: The whole e-book market is rapidly evolving, and a lot of self-publishing companies are offering e-book deals bundled into their print book publishing packages, which makes them harder to break out and evaluate. It's all quite complicated, and in an effort to sort through the confusion, I've decided to offer a few basic tips and present what I think are some of the best options out there for creating an e-book quickly and easily. As things change -- and they will -- I'll do my best to keep this column up to date.

Great post and great insight on how to get your ebooks published and where. This post gave me great ideas on a booklet I’m revising for my business. Thought I should publish as a .PDF on my website, but now I’m considering creating it for Kindle too. With the ever-changing audiences and readers demanding more for less, it really is important to be so progressive. I’m diversifying my offerings and this will be one avenue I definitely want to pursue.
FreeEbooksCanada is very specific about the ebook it uploads on its website but all the ebooks it uploads are highest rated and top quality. Those ebooks, reports, videos, graphics, software and themes which are PRO and usually not available for free anywhere else, you can find them in this website. However, the site publishes more about premium ebooks and provide direct download links to download those ebooks for free.
Kickasstorrents was opened in 2008 and Within 6 years of the inauguration in 2014, it became one of the most visited torrent websites. Even an unregistered user can take advantage of the benefits, however, the website cannot run all the time. But in December 2016, some former KAT members revived it once again and since then there has been no hindrance in it. So This is another best torrent site for download ebooks.
I’m working on my second ebook and have recently started using Jutoh as the means of auto-creating ebooks for multiple formats. It has a learning curve, but is really good for moving chapters and sections around (which requires a different TOC, which is automatic in Jutoh), automating cover creation, internal and external links, fixing formatting issues, and auto-compiling and producing books for multiple formats – Kindle, Nook, iPad, others. Worth a look. A bargain at $38. There is a free trial copy.

Many of you are not willing to pay for the e-books until and unless you decided to give your financial support to your favorite authors. Also, this is one of the reasons why people loving e-books than printed books- it is available for free. Yes, almost each and every e-book is available for free to download. All you need is some patience to checkouts multiple websites. There is a way that you can easily get your favorite e-books for free. Let us look at this technology in this article.
eBookIt is a straightforward e-book service that distributes to Amazon, Apple, B&N, Google, Sony, Ingram, and Kobo. The company offers a free DIY guide to formatting your own e-pub file and a free conversion service although there is a one-time $25 distribution fee. For full formatting and conversion it offers a paid service of $149 plus the $25 distribution fee. ISBNs are provided. Custom cover designs are available for $99. eBookit keeps 15% of the net profit and payments are made to authors using PayPal. Additional paid services include audiobook creation as well as press releases and media blasts. The eBookIt CEO also authored a free e-book sharing 50 of the best promotional and marketing ideas for independent authors. The eBookIt bookstore is a bit difficult to navigate with a limited selection of titles in list format with no cover designs, descriptions, or pricing visible. Authors looking for a design-oriented distributor bookstore that encourages discoverability might want to look elsewhere.
Dailylit uses different concept, it delivers selected ebook in installements to you. Just pick your book and what time of day you want your installments delivered and you’re set. Don’t want to carry Anna Karenina on the train? DailyLit sends you just enough for your morning commute or coffee break. Find yourself with some extra time? Can’t wait a whole day for the next chapter of Moby Dick? Just tap “Next installment” and it’ll be on its way.

A lot of people ask me about creating children's books or other types of graphically rich books and e-books. I can't say I'm an expert in this area, but when you're dealing with graphics and images, the self-publishing equation becomes more difficult and expensive (formatting costs tend to go up as you add more images). However, Apple's trying to change all that with iBooks Author, which allows you to build multitouch interactive e-books that you can upload and sell in the iBookstore and view in the iBooks2 app on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

I don't have a problem with that and think it's great that Apple offers iBooks Author for free. But the one thing that does bother me is Apple's failure to provide a free ISBN for your e-book. Instead, it tells you to get your own and provides a link to Bowker's Identifiers Services page. Bowker's charges $125 for a single ISBN or 10 for $250. The price drops to single digits when you buy thousands of ISBNs as other self-publishing outfits do. (You can buy a single ISBN for less than $125, but I'd prefer not get into all that). In short, it's patently absurd that Apple's making its authors pay $125 for ISBN number, and I think it's deterring a lot of people from publishing an iBook directly with Apple.
Calibre will allow you to convert a an epub file to Mobi or other formats and to also set a cover, and meta data – it will generate a complete ebook file you can upload to Amazon in a few moments – you can generate an epub file from Word using Aspose.WordsEXPRESS. You must know what settings to use in Calibre to generate an ebook from the resulting epub file. I will send you a free copy of my ebook about this called “Word to Kindle and Nook: How to Publish eBooks using Word” which details the settings and shows screenshots of the entire process. It takes just minutes to get a Word document ready for Kindle or Nook publishing using the two free programs. My ebook is not in Kindle Select now, so it has fallen greatly in sales on Amazon – in fact, I don’t do much writing, anymore. I am focusing on my abstract paintings since moving permanently to Hawaii – so anybody who wants a free copy of my book just let me know where to send it and I will give you a copy. You can use Fiverr.com to have someone design an ebook cover for you, too! I have formatted a word based ebook with 77,000 plus words in it and tons of images using these two programs and my special settings with perfect results. For the curious, this book is “Aliens in Egypt”, by Xaviant Haze.

VPNs encrypt your connection and reroute it through their servers, making it virtually untraceable and keeping you safe. It will be very hard, if not impossible, for anyone to keep track of what and when you download – and this extends to all of your other online activity, too. Just make sure your VPN has top-shelf encryption and a proven no-logging policy.

Upload your book file. This is the mobi for Kindle or the ePub for other stores. If it works, the upload will be shown as successful. You may get a notification of errors or spelling mistakes. Just fix them and re-upload another file if you need to. Most indies upload new files periodically as we update the back matter and lists of other books inside each book.

Any EBook Converter Free has a huge list of both input and output formats supported: EPUB, MOBI, DOCX, PDF, TXT, HTML, FB2, CBZ, CHM, LIT, ODT, PML, RTF, SNB, AZW3 and tons more. And as for the problem, I’m a fourteen year old (aspiring) author and I’m looking to self-publish my novel through KDP. But I really feel like it’s a sort of cop-out– just slapping it up on the internet and advertising. Like giving up without trying. I really want to share my work with others, but I don’t want just a few people to see it, I want it to be more than that. I’m not saying I will be disappointed with anything less than J.K. Rowling-worthy sales, but it would be comforting to know that it isn’t just uselessly floating around on the internet. Does any of that make sense? Furthermore, my current plan is to be a novelist for a living, and I feel like I might as well get myself out there sooner than later, right? Get started while my parents will still support me, build up my own little army of people wanting another book, and be set for a while?

Vintage Cookbooks includes in their collection of vintage cookbooks a collection of vintage cookbooks from the late 1800s to 1950s for children.  These will popup in an online reader, but if you look on the upper left of the reader, there is a link to OPen Library where the book may be downloaded in a wide variety of ebook formats.  No registration needed.
Generally speaking, if a company charges you for publishing your book and is fairly vague about what they are spending your money on, be alert. Once you sign your rights away, it is difficult to get them back. Other than vanity publishers, there are several companies that act as retailers and distributors and offer some publishing services (conversion or editing) as well. There are some things you’ll need to consider before signing up anywhere:
If you want to convert MOBI to EPUB, you don’t need to know about the difference between them, because this software will analyze files automatically and convert them to the corresponding files. Only by clicking the mouse, you will get the new EPUB ebook. If you want to convert them in bulk, you can finish this task in short time through the batch handling function.

However, I have to comment about the book you used for art at the top of this post. Paula McLain’s critically acclaimed novel, The Paris Wife, a New York Times best seller and winner of many awards, is NOT a self-published e-book. Nor, is it your book. Yes, Paula’s novel — still selling well in hardcover — is available on a Kindle. But it is misleading to include it next to a declaration that you’ve just finished writing your first e-book. As artists, we all need to guard against even the appearance of appropriating others’ creative work as our own. Or, of using others’ art without credit. The post didn’t explain why you used her book as an example. And neither she, nor her novel, were identified, despite being featured prominently.
Announce the event or book sales campaign on Google+ and also on Goodreads at least three weeks before the date. They both offer a free event function. A site that is very easy and fast to set up. Promote this event (can be real life or virtual) heavily on FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Google, your blog and to your email list. And if your local newspaper, neighborhood paper etc. has an event page, or if they have an online version, get your event in! Search the internet for events/websites in your area and announce it there too.
