From my experience of publishing two fiction books on kindle, actually writing them and publishing them was the easy part. Trying to publicise your work, get sales and push your books up the rankings is a very hard slog. Perhaps it may become easier the more books you publish because then it becomes a numbers game like having more chance of winning a prize the more entry tickets you buy.

Manybooks has hands down, one of the best user interfaces and design in the microcosm of e-book torrent sites. You can easily navigate through the site using categories/filters like Genres, Titles, Authors, Language, Popular, Featured Authors, and Recommended. Some of the sub-genres on the site are Action/Adventure, Biographies, Children’s, Literary Fiction, Romance, Paranormal, Young Adult, and Non-Fiction. As of today, the site hosts over 33,000 free e-book titles. If you’re a writer yourself, you can even use their platform to promote your book.
Thank you, Jane, for such a prompt reply. And, well, if that’s true about Rogue (as it seems it might be), then, with the kind of work I’ve written, that puts me back to Square One. My reasoning was taken from an article by a Writer’s Digest article I saw from June of this year by Brian Klems entitled “How Can the Average Writer Make Money Self-publishing Ebooks.” The link is: http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/how-can-the-average-writer-make-money-self-publishing-e-books He said this re: Rogue Reader/MTM: “• Rogue Pricing. Gary,I agree. I actually got my husband to get really really good at this and now he is doing the formatting and publishing for others, and of course he is doing all of my books. It helps to do a professional publish because as you say,it is very important to make the right impression with our books. I am so happy that Amazon brought us the Kindle store. It is an amazing platform!
Amazon offers a 70 percent royalty rate for authors, but some rules apply (see the complete list of terms). This is the same royalty that Apple offers iPhone/iPad app developers and authors who sell e-books via its iBookstore store. You can upload your e-book directly to the iBookstore, but you have to fill out an application and it's a bit of a process. That's why authors tend to use an "aggregator" like Smashwords or Lulu to get into the iBookstore (see complete list of Apple-approved aggregators here). Even though the iPad supports most of the leading e-book stores (Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook, Kobo), getting into the iBookstore is becoming more important as Apple continues to sell millions of iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches.
You are stealing not just the book, but the author’s payment as well. You’re also the kind of idiot that thinks all authors earn ‘enough’, that they all earn the same kind of money as JK Rowling. The truth is that most don’t earn enough to write full-time. They write at night, early in the morning, any moment they can snatch while holding down sometimes up to 2 jobs to make ends meet.
BookBaby. BookBaby publishes and distributes ebooks to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Apple. BookBaby offers a variety of services such as format conversion, cover design, and even custom book printing. BookBaby’s basic package is $99, plus $19 annual fee after the first year. The author retains 100 percent of royalties from online retail stores. Payments are weekly.
Pricing: Some services have limits on how to price your book. For instance, Amazon doesn’t allow authors to offer their books for free, and both Amazon and Kobo offer different royalties in different price ranges. This may not be a bad thing (after all, they know the pricing “sweet spots”), but you want to avoid getting stuck in a situation where you don’t like the price and can do nothing about it. Finding the right price for your ebook is not easy; choose a platform where you can experiment before committing.
The website of ebookee is again another torrent website centering a huge collection of e-books with a well-distributed category as for example, books on tech, tutorials, non-fiction, novels, computer programming, mathematics, windows, medicine, etc. What is most unique about this website is its system of sub-categories that makes it really easy to choose a book related to what you want.
iBooks Author allows authors to create and publish their own e-books for sale in Apple’s iBookstore. The process is a bit more involved compared to other e-book services, but it’s a great option for design-savvy authors with multimedia-heavy books like children’s books or cookbooks. Authors can choose from several templates, including classic textbook, cookbook, or photo book and have the ability to add charts, tables, audio, and video to their books using widgets or “drag and drop.” To begin, authors must fill out a Paid Books Account application, which is reviewed in approximately two business days. Once authors receive a confirmation email, they must download a “delivery application” in order to deliver the book. Authors must have an Apple ID along with a valid credit card on file to sell books. iBooks Author does not offer a conversion service, but Apple does offer a list of approved “aggregators” who will format and deliver your book to the iBookstore for a fee -- these include Bookwire, Ingram, INscribe, Smashwords, and BookBaby. Royalties are 70% of list price with no fees. ISBNs are not provided.
One thing, though, I’m not sure how good their formatting service is and it doesn’t look like you can proof read your eBook on a reader device (I proof all my eBooks on my Kindle prior to sending them to BookBaby), so it’s kind of a shot in the dark if you don’t have a level of quality control there. I’ve seen people hire professional eBook programmers and due to a lack of quality control they ended up with a whole section of their book poorly formatted and nearly unreadable.
You have about three months to promote a new print book (paper back or hardcover) before the bookstores clear their shelves for the next bestseller. But if you can rack up enough pre-orders BEFORE the pub date, then you can kickstart your book launch. Once it hits the New York Times or other lists, then a couple of weeks on those lists become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Again: the more time you give your book to be listed on Amazon and other online retailers BEFORE your publication date, the better.
Hi – thanks for this post. I knew about having to have the right format for an ebook to be on Kindle and Amazon. Those distribution centers are a bit way off for me right now. But – what I want to do is to offer a short ebook in a PDF on my blog/Facebook page etc – to encourage people to sign up for my blog and to like me on Facebook. How professional does a free ebook have to be? Can I just hire an editor to help me with the layout for that?
It can be a fun and friendly competition to get people excited about your book. And there’s no better platform than Social Media sites to do just that. You can call it the “Know my Book?” photo contest. All participants need to do, is to take a creative photo with the words “Know my Book?” or “Help Me Launch.” The three best images might receive the book or you can offer an additional first prize for a Kindle or a digital camera.
Beyond the excellence of the content itself, it’s going to be all about how well you market that eBook and get the word out that will determine if it gets its day in the digital sun. Speaking of Sean Platt, I’m working on something with his company that may well address how to help with that promotion (but can’t disclose this yet as it’s being built ; -). Promise to let all your readers know when that happens.

Vintage Cookbooks includes in their collection of vintage cookbooks a collection of vintage cookbooks from the late 1800s to 1950s for children. These will popup in an online reader, but if you look on the upper left of the reader, there is a link to OPen Library where the book may be downloaded in a wide variety of ebook formats. No registration needed.
The PRO version of this very good torrent client for Mac OS X allows you to easily find the torrent content directly in the app. Browsing multiple torrent trackers won’t be something you need to worry about with the Pro version. Simply input your search words in Folx, and it will go search all the torrent trackers, displaying only the relevant ones for you to download.
Paul, Thank you so much for this valuable content, you have just saved me a LOT of time and made the consideration of producing an eBook a lot more doable. I keep thinking I must start work on an eBook and have had thoughts about Amazon, but didn’t really believe it would be possible or that I would run into too many issues. Hearing this from someone who has been through the process is so valuable….now to decide what would be of value to my audience. Thinking time 🙂
Book name/Title. You need to enter the exact title as shown on the cover in this field. This is because people used to ‘stuff' keywords into the title field e.g. “Paranormal romance with a noir detective twist.” If it's not on the cover, you can't include it here! However, you can change your title if you want to rebrand the books in the future. It can be done, but it's not easy. Here's my own experience with changing titles and covers.

On the surface, Booktango, which bears the "beta" tag, looks fairly slick and should improve as the company adds more features. The ability to have WYSIWYG formatting capabilities is nice (even on the iPad) and you can either upload a cover image of your own choosing or design one using some provided templates. All in all, it looks like a perfectly decent way to get your e-book formatted and distributed to all the major e-book stores quickly. Like its competitors, Booktango also manages your e-book sales -- it rolls them all up into one account -- and you can have your royalties sent directly to your checking account.
Torrentz is yet another peer to peer file sharing protocol website based on BitTorrent commands. Very few torrenting sites survive the storm brought about by copyright infringement authorities, and The Pirate Bay (aka TPB) is one of them. In spite of being closed down multiple times, the site still continues to operate in full swing. You’ll find a massive range of e-Books in its database, ranging across a wide array of genres such as contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction, travel guides, etc. Note that in some regions TPB has been blocked so you can use a proxy site to get access to the content. Once you’re on the site, simply key in whichever e-Book you wish to download, and voila! You can look for The Pirate Bay proxy sites on this webpage.
FreeBookSpot is another torrent site that caters specifically to e-book consumers. It has over 90 categories belonging to a horde of genres including engineering, fiction, architecture, astronomy, audio books, computers, DIY, hardware, graphics, psychology, etc. Though it does have a decent catalogue of fiction titles, it is more popular for non-fiction and educational books. You can browse by genres or other sub-categories such as “Wanted”, “Expired”, “Most Popular”, and “Selections”. They do have an option for registering yourself as a user but that’s not mandatory to get access to the content. Aside from downloading e-books, you could even share your e-books and receive feedback from fellow users.
Manybooks provides 33,000+ free ebooks in formats supported by Kindle, Nook, iPad and most other eReaders. You can browse this free ebook library through genre, titles, authors, language or check out recent/popular ebooks. While lots of ebooks are totally free, some amazing but costly ebooks are also available at highly discounted price. So, if you want ebooks for free or don’t find paying few cents for an expensive e-book, Manybooks is great place for you to download free ebooks.
I’ve only published short documents (crochet patterns) on the Kindle Platform, but really want to write and publish an ebook. This article will help get me started. I also need to look into the Kindle Select program more deeply. I remember when it was announced, but didn’t pay too much attention to it because I didn’t want to give my patterns away for free. But 5 free days over a 90-day period isn’t bad at all, and the potential to earn via the lending library has really got me interested. Thanks for sharing.
Also, if you have books in print from previous publishing deals, you can get them scanned from print back into Word so you can produce an ebook from that retrospectively. Many authors who had deals over 10 years ago will own their ebook rights, so it’s worth checking your contracts to see if you can publish digital versions, even if a traditional publisher owns your print rights. Another free option is Any Ebook Converter. It supports EPUB, MOBI, AZW, PDF, and TXT files and allows you to edit a book’s metadata. Interestingly, the tool will also remove the DRM from any ebook automatically. Calibre can remove DRM from ebooks How to Remove the DRM on Every Ebook You Own How to Remove the DRM on Every Ebook You Own No one likes DRM. We all understand why it exists, but that doesn't mean we're ready to embrace it. Therefore, this article explains how to remove the DRM from every eBook you own. eBooks are also the fastest way to self-publish your book worldwide, making it easy for millions of readers to find, buy, and enjoy your book online on retail sites like Amazon’s Kindle Store, Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Store, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and many more. With eBooks, readers can take hundreds, even thousands of books on the go, and all on one device.
VPNs encrypt your connection and reroute it through their servers, making it virtually untraceable and keeping you safe. It will be very hard, if not impossible, for anyone to keep track of what and when you download – and this extends to all of your other online activity, too. Just make sure your VPN has top-shelf encryption and a proven no-logging policy.
Not your typical eBook marketplace, Slicebooks offers a platform for you to essentially sell sections of your eBooks or other content. So if your business books have some helpful chapters or snippets, you can use this platform to repurpose and sell just those parts for people who may not be interested in an entire eBook. Pricing starts at $9 per month.
I know what you must be thinking. Kickasstorrent original portal was taken down, but this came up as its alternative and trust me this is nothing less than its original version. Katcr.co is a public torrent website and does not require any sign-up. The eBook torrent collection is huge, but unfortunately, they are no ways to filter out per different category of books.
Just a few short years ago, the people who were most familiar with the ebook format were either internet marketers or their regular customers. It was a limited audience in many respects. Now, the general public knows what an ebook is and may be interested in having/buying it. Pricing is a lot lower because they’re now usually compared to print minus printing costs, but the audience is much much bigger I think.
You see, what the big publishing houses do with big offices of editors, writers, administrative staff… and then big printing presses… then distribution centers to get their books out to bookstores around the country… all to hopefully get books in the hands of customers… you can do on the computer you have right now. If that’s not massive disruption, I don’t know what is.
EBook Torrenting Sites: You all know torrents; if you know then probably you download at least a single piracy file via torrent. Isn’t it? Leave the piracy aside; torrent is a brilliant technology which works on peer-peer. You don’t need any separate servers here and there to host some famous files. If you are using bit torrent or any torrent client, after downloading your file your device will act as a server for the file you downloaded. This process is called seeding.
