Thank you for a well-written and well-formatted post. I’ve tried to scan all 182 comments and answers (!) but forgive me if this has already been addressed… I’m going to publish with KDP then opt-out @ 90 days so I can sell via my own site. I believe Word play better than Pages with KDP due to conversion issues to .mobi. My content will consist of stories, photographs and recipes – so I anticipate formatting nightmares.
Lastly, it's worth noting that Smashwords provides free ISBNs. I'm not going to get into a full on discussion of ISBN, which is "a unique identifier" associated with your e-book, but most companies provide a free ISBN for your e-book or roll the price up into a package. Smashwords has a good quick guide to e-book ISBNs that you should take a look at.
Advantage: Almost anyone can make an ebook. You can transform your manuscript from a word-processing format into an ebook by formatting it according to the platform on which you're publishing. Two of the most common platforms are Amazon's Kindle and Smashwords. Once it has been formatted, all you need is a few minutes to publish your book, and it could be up for purchase in as little as one or two days. Even better, it's free to publish on both Kindle and Smashwords, so anybody can publish an ebook for worldwide sale with a few simple clicks.
The Oz Series Most people think there is only the one book (Wizard of Oz), but there are 40 "official" books in the Oz series and several more "unofficial" Oz books. The official series started in 1900 and continued until 1963. I have located copies of the first 38 of the 40 official Oz books and have provided links to them. I have also located a few of the unofficial Oz works and will be posting up those links soon. This was one of my favorites as a child and I hope you enjoy them also.
It has been a fairly long span that Torrents eBook sites have been given much of the discussions. The officials of the company have been putting their best efforts to prevent piracy, however, without much success. When it comes to the aspect of download ebook from a torrent, the list includes options like software, music & video files, as well as games, ebooks, and even the episodes of the live reality show.
"I don't trust torrent sites, but this is all legit. You are only download document files, so you don't have to worry about any nefarious viruses, or things like that. They have a ton of free books available, more than you could ever imagine. The library is really impressive, and the search features really help you hone in on a book you are looking for, or may be interested in reading. I suggest this for any book lover out there who has had trouble with torrent sites in the past. "
It all depends on what you’re knowledgable in. If you’re writing about a specific craft that you’re well-versed in, your blog is used to educate your audience on useful tips and insights that you learned and used through your own experiences. For example, Copyblogger provides insight on publishing, writing, blogging, marketing, and so forth. Their product varies from WordPress themes and tools used within.
The PRO version of this very good torrent client for Mac OS X allows you to easily find the torrent content directly in the app. Browsing multiple torrent trackers won’t be something you need to worry about with the Pro version. Simply input your search words in Folx, and it will go search all the torrent trackers, displaying only the relevant ones for you to download.
Lulu offers four levels of e-book creation and distribution services, ranging from a free do-it-yourself version to the $219 Amplifier, which includes one paperback copy of your book and the option for print distribution to Amazon and BN.com. Lulu offers e-book distribution in the Lulu store, B&N’s Nook bookstore, and Apple’s iBookstore. It does not currently offer distribution to Amazon. Royalties are “90% of the revenue from sales of your e-book” less the commission from sales through B&N and Apple. If a document has images, tables, and footnotes the company recommends contacting Lulu customer support to find out about its “premium” package. E-books take from one to two weeks to be reviewed, approved, and uploaded to the author’s Lulu account for distribution, which makes the wait period a bit longer than other options. Any revision to the text after initial publication requires initiating a new “creation process.” If you haven’t opted for the free DIY service, you are required to purchase a new package in order to make your changes.
If you don't want to go the total DIY route, you can pay someone a few hundred dollars (or less) to format your e-book for you, but you'll still need to come up with a cover. J.A. Konrath, who's had a lot of success in the self-published e-book space and has written an excellent primer called "How to Make Money on eBooks," recommended Rob Siders at www.52novels.com. You can also try Ray Fowler at rayfowler.org. And Smashwords' founder Mark Coker maintains "Mark's List," which is a list of low-cost e-book formatters and cover designers with pricing starting at about $50. You can get the list via instant autoresponder by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Self-published authors have had big success in recent years. Take Hugh Howey, who sold a series of science fiction books through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. At one point, he was selling 20,000 — 30,000 copies a month, which generated $150,000 in income monthly. Amanda Hocking, who writes “paranormal romance” and fantasy novels, has sold well more than a million books on Amazon, generating over $2 million in sales. That's proof that you can make money self-publishing on Amazon.
3) I don’t know if its underestimated — I personally felt that as a blogger going the eBook route was just expanding and being more diverse with my writing, as well as adapting to the change in the online world. Also, many people have different motives to write. But, it is still very fairly new. I realized that PDF and newsletter subscription was a great way to sponsor and to attract subscribers, but for some reason I feel strongly about Kindle eBooks and reading apps readily available on multiple platforms (cellphone, tablet, etc.). I’m thinking we’re going to be seeing a lot of bloggers self-publishing their eBooks; however, the increase in the number of published eBooks has been consistently rising, so the power of free and the power of $0.99 cents will eventually have a new meaning (in my opinion).
This website lacks an option for you to get registered as a user as it is not essential to register yourself on this website to gain access to the million contents they have on their website. Apart from downloading the e-books that you have been searching for, you can share your own collection of e-books and get feedback from the website’s fellow users.
Set your pricing. Most of the stores have country-specific pricing and it's well worth setting these individually instead of relying on an automatic exchange rate calculation. For example, if you price at US$4.99 and just leave it to automatically calculate for GBP, then readers in the UK might see £3.21, which is an odd price. It's best to change the UK price to £2.99 or £3.49 which is a price readers are more used to seeing. Amazon has specific price bands for royalties, so you need to price between $2.99 and $9.99, if you want 70% royalty. If you're pricing below or above that, then it's 35%. If you're in KDP Select, it doesn't make so much of a difference, because you'll get paid per page read.
I’ve done a lot of eBooks that started out as nice print books with “sexy fonts” and my eBook programmer has been able to make those eBooks look just as nice as their print counterparts. Pretty fonts stay intact by embedding them as images within the code and complex graphics, bullets, bolds, italics and other formatting issues that come up with anything besides straight plain text look fabulous when a proper eBook programmer converts it.
With more than 90 categories of books in its library, this site has been dedicatedly built for eBooks and this is the site, wherein, you can expect to find the books of your choice, covering all the probable genres. This registration process takes the minimum time, and you need not pay a penny to complete the formalities in this regard. It is a free ebook torrent site. Once done, you are just a click away from finding the massive collection of books as per your choice.
eBook Converter can be viewed as a one-size-fits-all method to modify the format of an existing e-book file. This can be very useful, for there are many times when specific devices will not recognise a certain format. The ability to convert this data into a readable file will allow individuals to access a text regardless of where it is being displayed.
Another online eBook converter commonly used is Zamzar; a site which requires no download or user registration. Zamzar supports wide range of eBook formats and can be easily utilized for converting eBooks. Converted eBook files are sent to the specified email address and are accessible for the user to download them. The process of conversion is illustrated in the image above on the Zamzar website.
Beyond the excellence of the content itself, it’s going to be all about how well you market that eBook and get the word out that will determine if it gets its day in the digital sun. Speaking of Sean Platt, I’m working on something with his company that may well address how to help with that promotion (but can’t disclose this yet as it’s being built ; -). Promise to let all your readers know when that happens.
I recommend a multichannel approach — approach the marketing from several different angles. One definite channel is social media. Leverage your Facebook page, Twitter, LinkedIn contacts, and more to get the word out. When the book is published, post it on Facebook with a link back to your website with more information and a way to order, for example.
Piracy will happen if your book is popular. There’s really no way of stopping it, but what do you think the most pirated books are? Harry Potter and other big sellers, of course, and does that impact their sales? Most people who pirate books are not going to be your readers anyway. It’s more important to consider obscurity, then piracy. More authors suffer from being completely unknown than from being famous enough to be significantly pirated.
In our opinion, this is perhaps the best torrent site if you’re seeking nothing else other than e-books. Be it “Cooking”, “Computers”, “History”, “Fiction”, “Biography”, “Business”, or “Self-help”, you’ll find almost every genre under the sun on this site. Moreover, it has an impressive list of categories for easy browsing; a feature that lacks on the torrent sites mentioned above. You can even search for books as per their author, title, or subject. As of now, there are more than 4,00,000 books, and that is huge! Since this site is dedicated to e-books, its a brilliant option for avid readers.
BookYards has a huge database of over 21,000 ebooks which you can either browse by categories or authors. If you have found free download link to any important ebook, please submit here and if you have any important ebook, you can upload it to this website and help others to download it for free. The site is daily updated with new & interesting ebooks in variety of topics, all of which are available to download for free.
Good to hear, Patrice. Definitely weigh your options and see what is best for you. It’ll sound strange for me to say to not listen to anyone when picking a price or enrolling in KDP because what I really want people to do is experiment and learn on their own. It’s not like you’re only going to be writing one eBook for the rest of your life, so I find it important to test, experiment, and measure your results and play to your strengths.
Formatted wrong for digital. After doing the PDF, I learned you need very specific formatting in order for a book to transfer to Kindle and other popular ebook formats. Of course, I didn’t bother to learn those specs and use them in creating my PDF. Given that, I would have needed to get someone to reformat the whole thing and repaginate it, which sounded like a massive headache. So I just passed on the whole opportunity. Now I realized it was stupid not to make the effort to get it converted.
This free ebook converter has some optional ways to input ebook files. You can simply drag the ebooks you want to convert and drop them into the program. Or you can open a browser window to navigate to the source folder to input ebook files directly. It also intelligently detects and inputs all ebook files included in a folder and its sub-folder. That's how it makes things easier from the start.
While many authors report excellent experiences with the various companies listed here, it’s always important to read the fine print to determine which service is right for your book—and your budget. Are you willing to pay upwards of $1000 for add-on options that promise publicity or editorial support? Or are you looking for a cheap and quick way to get your book to the masses? Do you need a service that lets you add audio or high-resolution photographs to your book or have you just written 100,000 words of One Direction fan fiction? How important is it for you to have control of your content and edit it whenever you like? What about the individual bookstore design? Whatever an author’s individual needs, there’s an appropriate e-book publishing service—and often more than one.
