Give away the first chapter of your book as an immediately accessible PDF on your web page or on Amazon. Include a re-tweet button in several strategic locations in the chapter. This allows people who love what they read, to easily share with friends on Twitter. When someone clicks on this re-tweet button, it shows a pre-crafted tweet that says: “I’m reading @……. new book: … Get the first chapter free here too: http://………” You get the idea?
At least one tweet per hour, each one in a variety of text and accompanied by a cover image photo of your book or photographs from book scenes or areas where it takes place. Sign up to several Twitter accounts. You can have up to five accounts. But don’t post the same tweets everywhere! And schedule well in advance, using Hootsuite or any other free scheduling service to find the best times to post on Twitter.
I picked up an interesting comment today from an editor at Hachai Publishing: “Hard copies remain necessary if books are to be read and enjoyed on Shabbat, during which we do not use computers, handhelds, Kindles, or any other electronic devices.” I understand that in some Jewish traditions, the ancient prohibition against kindling [no pun intended] a fire on the Sabbath is still applied to using anything that runs on electrical or ignition power.
iBooks Author allows authors to create and publish their own e-books for sale in Apple’s iBookstore. The process is a bit more involved compared to other e-book services, but it’s a great option for design-savvy authors with multimedia-heavy books like children’s books or cookbooks. Authors can choose from several templates, including classic textbook, cookbook, or photo book and have the ability to add charts, tables, audio, and video to their books using widgets or “drag and drop.” To begin, authors must fill out a Paid Books Account application, which is reviewed in approximately two business days. Once authors receive a confirmation email, they must download a “delivery application” in order to deliver the book. Authors must have an Apple ID along with a valid credit card on file to sell books. iBooks Author does not offer a conversion service, but Apple does offer a list of approved “aggregators” who will format and deliver your book to the iBookstore for a fee -- these include Bookwire, Ingram, INscribe, Smashwords, and BookBaby. Royalties are 70% of list price with no fees. ISBNs are not provided.
Great post, and I’m glad I read it because I have a lot of ideas and have one book written (for teens), but I wasn’t sure if I should turn it into an eBook or keep it as a ‘full blown’ non-fiction book. Of course, I could self-publish it and write eBooks based on the material, develop webinars/teleseminars, speak with teens/parents/professionals who work with teens, etc. Hmm…I have a lot of thinking to do. It’s time I get off my butt and get my products out there. 🙂
Smashwords offers a free style guide for formatting your e-book. Although Smashwords encourages authors to keep things simple, you can still create a professional-quality e-book with Smashwords that includes a linked table of contents, NCX navigation, and custom paragraph styling. A couple of years ago, I created an acceptable-looking e-book in about 30 minutes after making some tweaks (usually they involve spacing between chapter breaks) and reprocessing my file three times. If you follow Smashwords' guidelines, you can end up with a professional-quality "reflowable" e-book that looks as good as what many of the big publishers are putting out and reads well on any screen size.
Not enough specifics. I’ve learned that writers need to be told very specifically, exactly how you do something. For instance, one I got recently: “If I’m contacting a charity about doing a pro bono sample, what exactly should I say to not seem desperate?” You can bet the next version of this material will have a lot more granular detail and answers to these nitty-gritty questions.

I begin with one caveat: The whole e-book market is rapidly evolving, and a lot of self-publishing companies are offering e-book deals bundled into their print book publishing packages, which makes them harder to break out and evaluate. It's all quite complicated, and in an effort to sort through the confusion, I've decided to offer a few basic tips and present what I think are some of the best options out there for creating an e-book quickly and easily. As things change -- and they will -- I'll do my best to keep this column up to date.
As of April 19, 2013, all pages have been updated and all links have been checked with LinkChecker and are working. Announce the event or book sales campaign on Google+ and also on Goodreads at least three weeks before the date. They both offer a free event function. A site that is very easy and fast to set up. Promote this event (can be real life or virtual) heavily on FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Google, your blog and to your email list. And if your local newspaper, neighborhood paper etc. has an event page, or if they have an online version, get your event in! Search the internet for events/websites in your area and announce it there too.
